The National Bank of Moldova awarded today the winners of the public consultations, launched by the NBM last summer in order to select the best design concept for the coins of 1 and 2 lei, put into circulation on 28 February 2018, in a unitary concept together with the coins of 5 and 10 lei.
Over 80 concepts were submitted to the public consultations by 33 designers. A mandatory condition was the approach, at least, of a relevant theme in order to illustrate the coins and to argument their choice, as well the possibility to execute the design on the coins’ surface.
The most successful concepts have been selected by a commission composed of the NBM’s experts and independent specialists in order to submit them for review by the NBM Executive Board.
Subsequently, the design of the coins put today into circulation passed through a process of ongoing improvement, being adjusted to best international practices. The National Bank reserved its right to use or not the concepts of the participants (see Section 10.1 of the Public Consultations Procedure).
"While implementing this ambitious project, the design of the coins planned for minting and putting into circulation was continuously improved. In this regard, there was analysed the experience of other central banks and used modern technologies to meet the expectations of our citizens. We believe that we have obtained the expected results, mainly due to the contribution of people who put their soul in the concepts submitted to the NBM "said Ion Sturzu, Deputy Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, at the today’s event dedicated to the 25th anniversary of the Moldovan leu.
Thus, the 1st place was awarded to Alexei Zubarev for the design concept of the coin with face value of 1 leu, being followed by Georgeta Vrabie on the 2nd place and Alexandru Miherea – on the 3d place, respectively. For the design concept of the coin with face value of 2 lei, the 1st place was awarded to Alexei Zubarev, the 2nd place – to Artiom Burichin and the 3d place – to Octavian Corcodel. The winners were awarded with silver commemorative coins.
