The Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Octavian Armașu, had a meeting today with the US Ambassador to the Republic of Moldova, Dereck J. Hogan.
Officials discussed the financial situation of the Republic of Moldova and the efforts of the authorities and society as a whole to overcome the crisis caused by the pandemic and, in this context, the importance of the National Bank's measures as a monetary and supervisory authority.
During the discussion, the Governor of the National Bank mentioned the continuity of the monetary policy decisions aimed at creating monetary conditions to support aggregate domestic demand and, respectively, the upward lending trend in the Republic of Moldova, which should help to ensure a macroeconomic environment conducive to national economy recovery.
In his turn, the US Ambassador noted the significance of our banking sector reforms for the resilience of banks to the uncertainties caused by the pandemic, for the economic development of the Republic of Moldova in general, and for maintaining the confidence of investors and development partners.
Dereck J. Hogan stressed the need to keep the reforms carried out with much effort in the banking sector and to continue them, which is possible only in the conditions of central bank independence, a key element for ensuring the financial stability of the Republic of Moldova. In this context, it was mentioned the importance of the understanding of this legal and economic imperative - the independence of the National Bank - by the society and the factors of high competence of the state for a perspective of increasing the living standards of the citizens.
