Anca Dragu: Central banks promote policies and regulations in the spirit of diversity and inclusion

The Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Anca Dragu, participated today in a dialogue forum dedicated to female leaders in the financial sector. The event is part of the agenda of the Central and Eastern European Forum (Invisso), a leading financial event for Central and Eastern Europe, held in Vienna.

The Governor of the NBM highlighted the role of central banks in supporting women, emphasizing the impact of diversity and gender equality in strengthening a stable and sustainable financial environment.

"Central banks play a fundamental role in shaping the financial architecture, and with this power comes a responsibility to ensure that the policies and regulations we promote are inclusive and equitable," stated the Governor of the NBM.

Anca Dragu added that the NBM encourages an inclusive organizational culture, ensuring that all employees, regardless of gender identity, feel valued at work and contribute effectively to achieving the central bank's objectives. Currently, 64 percent of all NBM employees are women, and 53 percent of managerial positions are held by women, reflecting the NBM's commitment to gender balance and inclusion.

Globally, according to the 2024 Gender Balance Index of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF), the proportion of women in senior management positions in central banks increased in 2023 from 14 to 16 percent. However, the representation of women at the top hierarchical levels remains an area of focus and an opportunity for improvement: of the 185 central banks worldwide, only 29 are headed by female governors. The NBM is a case in point, as it has, for the first time in its history, a woman at the helm of its team.
