On 1–2 October 2026, the National Bank of Moldova (NBM), in partnership with the Banque de France and the National Bank of Romania, will host the second edition of its international conference [2] on policy coordination for European convergence in Chișinău, entitled “Fiscal space and monetary anchoring under accelerated integration”.
The event will bring together more than 120 participants, including high-level representatives from central banks, public authorities, international organisations and the financial sector, providing a platform for an in-depth exchange of views and experience on the key challenges and opportunities shaping the financial landscape amid the accelerating process of European integration.
The conference will be attended by European Commissioner for Economy and Productivity Valdis Dombrovskis, who will deliver a keynote speech on European integration.
The list of guest includes leading figures from the European financial community: Andriy Pyshnyy, Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine; Agnès Bénassy-Quéré, Deputy Governor of the Banque de France; Gediminas Šimkus, Governor of the Bank of Lithuania; and Trajko Slaveski, Governor of the National Bank of North Macedonia.
The conference will focus on three main themes: the appropriate monetary regime for the pre-accession period; the effects of integration into the European Single Market on the economy; and the management of fiscal risks throughout this process.
“As the Republic of Moldova’s path towards European Union accession accelerates, one of the key decisions will be how to balance inflation targeting with exchange-rate stability, without compromising gradual convergence towards the euro area. This is a stage that requires discipline. We are carefully analysing the experience of other countries, and dialogue with our European partners provides us with concrete examples of where difficulties have arisen and which solutions have worked, as we develop a monetary framework adapted to the realities of our economy,” said Anca Dragu, Governor of the NBM.
The event will feature panels and academic sessions, bringing together public policy perspectives and research presentations. The agenda will combine discussions on the challenges and opportunities associated with European integration and convergence, from selecting the appropriate monetary regime for the pre-accession period to the effects of deeper Single Market integration on productivity and attracting foreign investment alongside a session dedicated to academic research.
“The experience of countries in the region shows that the process of structural convergence follows a common pattern. Productivity gains first emerge in export-oriented sectors, wages then increase across the economy as a whole, while service prices gradually align with European levels. The discussions will explore how sound convergence, without major imbalances, can be supported by public policies. We will discuss the selection of optimal instruments, policy sequencing, and relevant lessons from other small economies that have successfully completed the integration process,” said Mihnea Constantinescu, Deputy Governor of the NBM.
Now in its second edition and organised in a hybrid format, the conference is part of a series launched by the National Bank of Moldova to promote the exchange of expertise among financial-sector professionals and provide a forum for presenting and discussing research, thereby strengthening the Republic of Moldova’s position as an active partner in the international financial dialogue.
