The Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Ms Anca Dragu, held a working meeting with representatives of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). The EBRD delegation was led by Mr Arvid Tuerkner, Managing Director for Moldova and Ukraine, accompanied by Mr Giuseppe Grimaldi, Head of the EBRD in the Republic of Moldova.
The meeting focused on reviewing ongoing cooperation activities and discussing shared priorities for the period ahead, against the backdrop of a banking sector in the Republic of Moldova that remains resilient, well capitalised, and characterised by strong liquidity levels and a sound risk profile. A separate topic of discussion was the National Bank of Moldova's initiative to obtain recognition by the European Banking Authority (EBA) of the equivalence of the Republic of Moldova's prudential banking framework with that of the European Union. Obtaining such recognition would confirm the extent to which Moldova's banking regulatory and supervisory framework is aligned with European requirements.
“EBRD support is important for the development of the financial sector and for strengthening the Republic of Moldova's European path. The stability of the banking system, also confirmed by the assessments of international rating agencies, contributes to increased investor confidence. Aligning with European standards and strengthening financial stability remain our fundamental priorities. Despite external challenges, we are maintaining a resilient financial sector and are firmly committed to continuing reforms aimed at aligning with the EU acquis,” said Ms Anca Dragu.
The dialogue reaffirmed the partnership between the National Bank of Moldova and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, focused on modernising the financial sector and supporting the Republic of Moldova's European integration process.
The EBRD is one of the Republic of Moldova's main development partners. To date, the Bank has financed 199 projects in the country, with cumulative investments exceeding EUR 3 billion. The EBRD's current portfolio in the Republic of Moldova comprises 76 active projects, worth approximately EUR 1.33 billion, contributing to infrastructure development, strengthening energy security and supporting the private sector, thereby confirming the institution's role as a strategic partner in the economic development of the Republic of Moldova.
