NBM warns citizens about the risks of misinformation and the schemes of false investment

The National Bank of Moldova (NBM) calls the public opinion to pay attention to the intensification of manipulation attempts in the online space, including by misusing the image of high state dignitaries, including from the NBM, in order to promote alleged financial opportunities.

These materials, sometimes made using deepfake technologies (fake videos generated with the help of artificial intelligence), are shared on social networks and may falsely convey the idea that the authorities are promoting safe investments or secure returns.

The National Bank emphasizes that it does not promote any investment platform and does not provide any guarantee for financial products available to the general public. Such associations are unfounded and aim to mislead the general public.

Misinformation in the digital space, including by distorting the statements or appearances of dignitaries, can have a negative impact both on citizens' financial security and on trust in public institutions. In this context, the NBM urges the public to be cautious of viral content that promises quick wins and not to provide personal or bank details in messages or videos that do not come from official sources.

The National Bank encourages information exclusively from reliable and verified sources. All official communications of the institution can be consulted on the website www.bnm.md

The NBM has also previously published useful recommendations for identifying and avoiding investment fraud, available at this link: https://www.bnm.md/ro/content/bnm-informeaza-cetatenii-cum-sa-evite-sche...

The National Bank takes the risks related to the dissemination of false information seriously and is concerned that citizens are not misled. Protecting the public interest in an increasingly vulnerable digital environment requires not only the efforts of the authorities, but also the involvement of every citizen. By providing accurate information, checking sources and avoiding the distribution of misleading content, together we contribute to a more resilient society better protected against manipulation.
