Congrulatory message of Ms Anca Dragu, Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, on the occasion of Europe Day

Europe Day is an opportunity to reaffirm the Republic of Moldova’s clear direction: European integration built on reforms, strong institutions, and tangible benefits for citizens and businesses.

For the National Bank of Moldova, the European integration path is about modernising the financial sector, aligning with European standards, delivering safer and more efficient payment services, and strengthening public confidence in a stable, resilient and responsible financial system.

Over the past years, we have made significant progress in this direction: moving closer to the European payments area, developing modern payment infrastructure, advancing financial inclusion, and strengthening our dialogue with European institutions and partner central banks. These efforts show that Europe is being built here, in the Republic of Moldova, through tangible changes that make a real difference in the lives of citizens and businesses.

Exactly one year ago, on Europe Day, the Republic of Moldova took a historic step for its banking sector: Moldovan banks were admitted to the Single Euro Payments Area - SEPA. Today, that milestone is delivering tangible results: faster, safer and more affordable transfers for citizens, businesses and the diaspora. More than 70% of the volume of cross-border euro transactions is now processed through SEPA, while transfer costs have decreased by over 90%, reaching an average of EUR 1.26 per transfer. This is clear evidence that European integration is already bringing concrete benefits to the citizens of the Republic of Moldova.

Europe Day is also about responsibility, transparency, solidarity and trust. In the current context, it reminds us of the values of democracy, peace and freedom. These are the guiding principles that shape our work and give meaning to the reforms we promote.

The Republic of Moldova belongs to the European family through its history, culture and aspirations.
Our mission is to contribute, through a modern and credible financial system, to the country’s irreversible path towards the European Union.

Happy Europe Day!
Happy Europe Day to European Moldova!
