National Bank and the members of its decision-making bodies shall be independent in exercising the tasks conferred upon them by law, and shall neither seek nor take instructions from public authorities or from any other authority.
In order to ensure and maintain price stability over the medium term, the National Bank’s aim will be to keep inflation (measured by Consumer Price Index) at the level of 5.0 percent annually with a possible deviation of ± 1.5 percentage points, considered to be optimal for growth and development of Moldova's economy over the medium-term.
National Bank shall have the exclusive right to issue on the territory of the Republic of Moldova banknotes and coins as legal tender, as well as commemorative and jubilee banknotes and coins as legal tender and for numismatic purposes.

As from 30 December 2016, the National Bank of Moldova issued into circulation six commemorative coins as legal tender and for numismatic purposes.
The series “Personalities” will be completed with a coin dedicated to celebrating the 100th anniversary of the birth of the plastic artist – Mihail Grecu, who was an innovative painter that revolutionized the fine arts in the Republic of Moldova. The coin represents the effigy of Mihail Grecu and is minted in gold and in silver. The gold coin has a face value of MDL100 and with a circulation of 100 copies. The silver coin has a face value of MDL 50 and has a circulation of 200 copies.
Other silver coins that complement the series "Historical events" are dedicated to celebrating 300 years from the first edition of monography "Description of Moldova" by Dimitrie Cantemir. The coin has face value of MDL 100 and an issuing volume of 250 copies.
Series „ Holidays, culture, traditions of Moldova” is completed by a coin minted in silver, dedicated to the traditional dance „Hora”. The coin has the face value of MDL 50 and an issuing volume of 250 copies.
Series "Sanctuaries" is complemented with a new commemorative coin - "180 years since the construction of the "Nativity" Cathedral in Chișinău". With a face value of MDL 50 and an issuing volume of 250 coins, this commemorative coin is a continuation of the vaporization of the local architectural monuments of its kind.
The last coin to be put into circulation as on 30 December 2016, “Red-breasted goose”, will complete the series “Red Book of the Republic of Moldova”, representing an appeal to protect endangered flora and fauna. The coins are minted in silver with the face value of MDL 50, and an issuing volume of 1000 copies.
The commemorative coins, packed in transparent methacrylate capsules and presentation boxes, will be accompanied by certificates of authenticity, written in Romanian and English and signed by the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova.
The jubilee and commemorative coins issued by National Bank of Moldova will be available for sale through the licensed banks.
The licensed banks will determine independently the selling price of jubilee and commemorative coins, up to three percent over the price at which they were purchased from National Bank of Moldova.
