National Bank and the members of its decision-making bodies shall be independent in exercising the tasks conferred upon them by law, and shall neither seek nor take instructions from public authorities or from any other authority.
In order to ensure and maintain price stability over the medium term, the National Bank’s aim will be to keep inflation (measured by Consumer Price Index) at the level of 5.0 percent annually with a possible deviation of ± 1.5 percentage points, considered to be optimal for growth and development of Moldova's economy over the medium-term.
National Bank shall have the exclusive right to issue on the territory of the Republic of Moldova banknotes and coins as legal tender, as well as commemorative and jubilee banknotes and coins as legal tender and for numismatic purposes.
National Bank is exclusively responsible for the licencing, supervision and regulation of financial institutions activity.
National Bank of Moldova acts as banker and fiscal agent of the State and shall receive from state bodies economic and financial information and documents, which are necessary for carrying out its tasks.
National Bank of Moldova supervises the payment system of the Republic of Moldova and promotes a stable and efficient functioning of the automated inter-bank payment system
National Bank of Moldova is an autonomous public legal entity and is responsible to the Parliament.
National Bank shall inform the public on the monetary policy strategy on the results of the macroeconomic analysis, the evolution of the financial market and on statistics, including with regard to monetary supply, crediting, balance of payments and the state of the foreign exchange market.
National Bank of Moldova is responsable for the compilation of the balance of payments, international investment position and the statistics of the external debt of the Republic of Moldova.

Ms. Natalia Gavrilita was appointed as Member of the Supervisory Board of the National Bank of Moldova by the Decision of the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova No 215 of 20 July 2023. Ms Natalia Gavrilita is not an employee of the NBM.
At the date of her appointment, Ms. Natalia Gavrilita has more than 20 years of experience in the public and private sector.
She served as Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova from August 2021 until February 2023.
She was Minister of Finance from June 2019 until November 2019.
From 2015 to 2019 and 2020 to 2021 she worked at the Global Innovation Fund (GIF), London, UK as director (2015-2019) and consultant (2020-2021).
She worked at the Ministry of Education of the Republic of Moldova as Secretary of State (2014-2015) and Chief of Staff (2013-2014).
From 2009 to 2013 Ms. Natalia Gavrilita worked for Oxford Policy Management in the UK as a Portfolio Manager on valuation methods, Statistics, Evidence and Accountability Program (2011-2013), and as a senior consultant, Public Sector Finance and Management Programme (2009-2011).
From 2008 to 2009 she was the Head of the Directorate for Policy Coordination and External Assistance within the State Chancellery of the Republic of Moldova.
From 2007 to 2008 she was the Head of the Department for Economic Forecasts and Development Programmes at the Ministry of Economy and Trade of the Republic of Moldova.
During her professional activity, Ms. Natalia Gavrilița has gained extensive knowledge and experience in the economic, legal and political fields in several countries in Africa, Central and South Asia.
Ms. Gavrilita graduated from Moldova State University with a bachelor’s degree in international law (2000) and holds a master’s degree in public policy from Harvard University, Kennedy School of Government, Cambridge USA (2005).
