On 16 August 2019, the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) launches a metallic circulating coin of commemorative nature with a face value of MDL 10, on the occasion of the national holiday “National Language Day”, which is celebrated in the Republic of Moldova on 31 August.
The coin is dedicated to the 30th anniversary from the adoption of the law on state language and the Latin script, and completes the series of circulating commemorative coins. The first coin of this type was issued by the NBM in 2018 on the 25th anniversary from the introduction of the domestic currency into circulation.
The new coin is minted from steel, plated with nickel and brass, which creates a bimetallic aspect of the coin: silver and gold, and will have a circulation of 250,000 copies.
The obverse of the coin has in the foreground the image of the charming bird rising to the sun – the emblem “Limba Noastră” (Eng. National Language Day), on the top – the coat of arms of the Republic of Moldova and the inscription on the circumference – “30 Years from the Adoption of the Laws on State Language and Latin Script”.
On the reverse of the coin, the 26 low case letters of the modern Latin alphabet are engraved in a circle, and refers to the transition to the Latin script. The nominal value “10 LEI” (Eng. MDL 10) is placed in the centre and the year of issue “2019” – on the top.
The coin has the monogram from the letters “R” and “M”, which represents the acronym of the state – Republic of Moldova, in latent image.
The new coin will circulate in parallel with the MDL 10 banknote and the metallic coin with the same face value, including the commemorative coin issued in 2018.
