Financial inclusion and sustainable development on the agenda of the NBM delegation at the international meetings in Washington

The Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Anca Dragu, participated on 25 April in a high-level debate organized by the World Bank in Washington. The main topic was the promotion of financial inclusion as a driver of sustainable economic development in the Europe and Central Asia region.

The event, entitled "Promoting Women's Economic Empowerment through Financial Inclusion" brought together representatives from international financial institutions, central banks and partner organizations. It was dedicated to exploring solutions for expanding access to financial services, boosting digitalization and supporting women's active participation in the economy.

In her speech, the Governor of the NBM highlighted the progress made by the Republic of Moldova in the digitalization of financial services, as well as initiatives to expand the public access to modern financial instruments.

Among these initiatives is the Instant Payment System (MIA): launched in March 2024, MIA enables fast and accessible electronic transfers for both individuals and businesses. Currently, one in three Moldovans with banking potential uses this service, reflecting progress in the digitalization of financial infrastructure and the expansion of financial inclusion.

In March 2025, the "FinanciarELE – Women’s Leadership Community" project was launched, an initiative dedicated to developing financial and leadership skills among women in the Republic of Moldova. This initiative provides access to mentorship programs, professional training and career opportunities in the financial-banking sector, thus contributing to the diversification and strengthening of human capital in the financial sector.

"Financial inclusion is not just about access to financial products and services, it is about the ability of every individual, regardless of gender, age or social status, to actively contribute to economic life. Our progress in the digitalization of the financial system and support for the development of diversified leadership are key to strengthening sustainable economic growth and ensuring equitable participation in society," said Ms. Anca Dragu.

The event took place in the context of the participation of the Republic of Moldova’s delegation in the Spring Meetings of the World Bank Group and the International Monetary Fund.
