NBM Governor Anca Dragu at Impact SEE: European integration is built through strong institutions and tangible benefits for people and businesses

Today, 29 September 2026, Governor of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) Anca Dragu participated in the third edition of the “Impact SEE” conference, a regional event dedicated to the economy, financial sector and technology in South-Eastern Europe.

During the discussion on central banking, economic convergence and stability in South-Eastern Europe, the Governor presented the Republic of Moldova’s experience in strengthening the banking sector, bringing financial services closer to European standards and implementing monetary policy to ensure price stability.

“European integration is built even before actual accession to the European Union. For a central bank, this means financial institutions operating according to European standards and consistently applied rules, but also results that people can already feel: faster transfers, lower costs and closer economic ties with the European Union,” said NBM Governor Anca Dragu.

Ms Dragu presented the developments in the banking sector of the Republic of Moldova, which has continued to strengthen in recent years. Banks have high levels of capitalisation and liquidity, while the significant growth in lending in recent years reflects their contribution to financing the economy. The NBM Governor highlighted the contribution of banking supervision and the alignment of regulations with European standards to maintaining financial stability.

“Investor confidence rests on credible institutions and a banking sector capable of financing the economy responsibly. Banking sector reforms have strengthened this foundation in the Republic of Moldova. Sharing experience with central banks in the region helps us to continue reforms and be better prepared for future challenges,” Ms Dragu emphasised.

Banking sector reforms are part of a broader process of bringing the Republic of Moldova closer to the European Union. This process is already delivering tangible benefits for citizens and businesses, including through connection to the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). During the first 11 months of operation, approximately 1.1 million transfers were made through this system, with savings on fees estimated at nearly EUR 15 million. At national level, the MIA Instant Payments system has surpassed one million users and continues to expand payment options for businesses.

Impact SEE is a regional conference dedicated to the economic and technological development of South-Eastern Europe. The third edition is taking place in Bucharest on 29–30 September 2026 and brings together representatives of public institutions, the business community and the financial sector.
