NBM puts into circulation a new commemorative coin

Starting from 2 May 2025, the National Bank of Moldova launches the commemorative coin “Vasile Lupu”, which completes the series “Rulers of the Principality of Moldavia”.

The coin is dedicated to Vasile Lupu, the ruler of the Principality of Moldavia, who reigned from 1634-1653 and was known for his cultural, economic and military contributions. During Vasile Lupu's reign, the judicial system was modernized.

The launch of the commemorative coin “Vasile Lupu”, starting on 2 May 2025, will take place in the context of the printing of Vasile Lupu’s Code of Laws (Pravila lui Vasile Lupu) on 4 May 1646, known as the “Romanian book of learning”. With the “Pravila of Vasile Lupu”, Moldavia transitioned from unwritten law (the custom of the land) to written law. This was the first Moldavian legal code, created based on the processing of Roman-Byzantine legal norms. The coin dedicated to the commemoration of Vasile Lupu reflects the recognition of these essential achievements for the development of the Principality of Moldova.

The commemorative coin is struck in silver, has a nominal value of 50 lei and a mintage of 500 units.

The design of the commemorative coin “Vasile Lupu” was created by the State Mint of Romania.

The coin is packaged in a transparent methacrylate capsule and presentation box, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity with a QR code, which, when scanned, redirects to the National Bank's website with information about the coin’s features. The certificate of authenticity contains the signature of the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova.

Commemorative coins are sold to the general public both by the National Bank of Moldova, based on requests submitted online through the NBM website in the "Currency" section, and through licensed banks in the Republic of Moldova. Licensed banks have the right to independently set the selling price of jubilee and commemorative coins, which shall not exceed by three percent the price set by the National Bank of Moldova.
