Starting on 1 December 2025, the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) will launch into circulation the commemorative coin "Queen Marie of Romania – 150 years since birth", which completes the "Personalities" series.
The coin is issued in memory of Queen Marie of Romania (1875-1938), an exceptional figure who played a crucial role in the unification of the Romanian Principalities and in building national identity. Her activity was multifaceted, involving her in political, social, and cultural life. Queen Marie was passionately dedicated to achieving the national ideal of the Great Union, bringing Bessarabia, Bukovina, and Transylvania under the same Romanian state. She was an important source of support for those in need and a strong advocate for Romanian traditions and cultural values.
The commemorative coin is minted in silver, has a face value of 100 MDL, and a mintage of 750 units. The designer of the commemorative coin "Queen Marie of Romania – 150 years since birth" is the State Mint of Romania.
The coin is packaged in a transparent methacrylate capsule and presentation box, accompanied by a certificate of authenticity bearing the signature of the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova.
"The launch of this commemorative coin is a gesture through which we reaffirm the continuity of the values that keep us anchored in the European space today: dignity, freedom, and the power to build together. Queen Marie remains a symbol of courage and vision that united people at decisive moments. Through the power of her personality, she constantly reminds us that the strength of a nation rests on strong characters and respect for its own history," says NBM Governor Anca Dragu.
The certificate includes a QR code that provides direct access to information about the coin's characteristics, available on the National Bank's official website.
Commemorative coins are available for purchase by the general public from the National Bank of Moldova, either through online applications submitted in the "Coin" section on the institution's website or via licensed banks in the Republic of Moldova. Licensed banks have the right to independently set the sale price of the jubilee and commemorative coins, which shall not exceed the level set by the National Bank of Moldova by more than three percent.
