“A vacation day at the NBM”: children discover the world of money with central bank experts

The headquarters of the National Bank of Moldova (NBM) was transformed today into a place of curiosity and discovery. More than 60 children, aged between 7 and 10, stepped into the world of money, learning in an engaging and age-appropriate way about the role of a central bank and how to make responsible financial decisions.

Held under the theme “A vacation day at the NBM”, the event offered young participants an interactive educational experience, bringing financial concepts to life through games, conversations and activities tailored to their age group.

The children were welcomed by the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Ms Anca Dragu, who encouraged them to stay curious, ask questions and confidently explore the world of money.

“Financial education begins in childhood, with a child’s very first questions about money and the world around them. Children ask honest, direct and often surprisingly profound questions, and it is our responsibility to provide clear, age-appropriate answers while nurturing their desire to learn. Through this initiative, we have turned learning into an engaging experience where play, dialogue and discovery complement one another naturally. A child who understands the value of money can grow into an adult who makes responsible financial decisions,” said the Governor of the National Bank of Moldova, Ms Anca Dragu.

During their visit, the children explored the NBM’s exhibition hall and discovered how money has evolved over time. They admired the collection of gold and silver commemorative coins and used specialised equipment to identify the security features of banknotes.

Throughout the workshops, concepts that might otherwise seem complex were explained in simple, accessible language. Movement-based games, puzzles and other educational activities turned the programme into a genuine adventure of discovery. In this way, the children took their first steps towards understanding concepts such as saving, financial responsibility and the role of money in everyday life.

The curiosity, enthusiasm and active participation of the young visitors energised the entire event and demonstrated that financial education can become a memorable experience when built around curiosity, play and dialogue.

Now in its sixth edition, “A vacation day at the NBM” is part of the National Bank of Moldova’s broader initiatives to promote financial education among children and young people. Through activities such as these, the NBM is helping to foster a generation that has a better understanding of the value of money and is well prepared to make responsible financial choices.
